Ipe is one of the most durable woods in the world. It is known for its strength and natural resistance to decay. Ipe lumber can be used in ground contact applications without preservatives or additional treatments. Ipe decking is used in commercial exterior construction in boardwalks, piers, and benches. It is also an excellent choice for residential decks due to its low maintenance, attractive color, and smooth surface. Ipe is extremely durable and will last a lifetime. Ipe is dense: It sinks in water and carries a class “A” fire rating-–the same held by concrete and steel.
TIGERWOOD / ASTRONIUM FRAXINIFOLIUM
Tigerwood is a beautiful exotic Brazilian hardwood which provides one of the most unique patterns you will ever see. Tigerwood is so named for its red and orange background punctuated with dark veined striping. It darkens to a slightly deeper hue of red with additional exposure to sunlight. Tigerwood’s striking beauty draws praise from designers, who covet it highly for both interior and exterior applications.
CUMARU (Brazilian Teak) / DIPTERYX ODORATA
The sapwood of Red Cumaru is very similar to the heartwood, ranging from red-brown to deep red in color. Over time the red Cumaru tones will “flatten out” slightly. The species has an irregular, slightly interlocked grain and is coarse and wavy in texture. This dense, attractive Brazilian hardwood shares many characteristics with Ipe’, but Cumaru has no olive-green hues. Cumaru is sometimes referred to as Brazilian Teak or Southern Chestnut.
Massaranduba has color variance from a dull plum-red to a light brown, the grain is primarily straight, and the texture is fine and uniform.
GARAPA / (Brazilian Oak)/ APULEIA LEIOCARPA
Garapa is lemon-yellow becoming light (honey) brown with age. Garapa has a slight ribbon-like aspect–watery, wavelike–a silky appearance. Garapa is naturally resistant to wood decay and insect damage. It also has a class “A” fire rating—identical to concrete. Garapa is naturally scratch resistant and has an estimated useful life of 25 years. Deck oil preservation treatments will add additional years to the life of this very durable wood decking. Garapa is comparable to Ipe’ in durability, grain, and workability, but it is an economical buy. Finishing this fine Garapa decking with brown–tinted oil provides a soft brown finish similar to Ipe’ without the board-to-board color variations.
